Phonics Instruction
Reading by the Rules is a multi-sensory, structured word study program. The program uses multi-sensory techniques (visual, auditory, tactile, movement, story) and a consistent scope and sequence. Instruction is explicit, rule-based, and incorporates frequent review. (See lesson plan format suggestions.) Visuals and stories bring context to the student which aides in retrieval and fluency of challenging sounds and sequencing skills. Stories and visualizations are phased out once the student can quickly access the phonetic structure. Visualization Cards are easily made and can be used in lessons, work activities and interactive games. Different sized cards (ninth, sixth), decoding chart sheets and lesson plans/schedules can be customized.
From 2004 to 2007, a team of teachers at FCRR collected ideas and created Student Center Activities for use in kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms. Accompanying these Student Center Activities is a Teacher Resource Guide and Professional Development DVD that offers important insights on differentiated instruction and how to use the Student Center materials.
